A short 35 minute ferry ride from Auckland,
Waiheke Island is 92 square kms. of beaches, native bush,
vineyards, olive groves and quaint villages. In the early
1980s Waiheke Island, in Auckland harbor, was established
as a fashionable district for the production of high quality
red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet
Franc. Now considered by many to be one of the world's
finest producers of Merlot, it also produces world class
Chardonnay’s. Over the lengthy ripening season in
our cool climate, merlot is able to slowly build and concentrate
its flavours. Waiheke vineyards produce red wines of alluring
richness, plumpness and suppleness and its early drinking
appeal is a boon to wine lovers. Where cabernet may lack
weight on the middle palate, when blended with merlot
the flavour is filled out nicely and length and persistence
are added to the taste. |

Equal to the international acclaim for New Zealand’s'
beauty is that for its highly distinctive, premium quality
wines. New Zealand's small population, distant location
and agricultural economy have earned the country a 'clean,
green' image. With wine growing regions spanning the latitudes
of 36 to 45 degrees and covering the length of 1000 miles
(1,600km). The Northern Hemisphere equivalent would run
from Bordeaux (between the latitudes of 44 and 46 degrees)
down to southern Spain. New Zealand's temperate, maritime
climate has a strong influence on the country's predominantly
coastal vineyards. The vines are warmed by strong, clear
sunlight during the day and cooled at night by sea breezes.
The long, slow ripening period helps to retain the vibrant
varietal flavours that make New Zealand wine so distinctive.
